PSP phone concept - Image 1Amidst all the concept art, the discussions and even the denials, rumors of a PSP phone live on. According to Mobile Entertainment, insiders have suggested that Sony Ericsson is indeed exploring the possibility of a gaming-centric mobile phone.

Those clamoring for a PSP phone, however, will have to wait a bit longer, it seems. As Mobile Entertainment noted, Sony Ericsson's gaming phone - which is reportedly scheduled for a February 2008 launch - will not carry the PSP branding.

What it will have, though, is motion sensitivity for "Wii-like gameplay" on a handset - despite some recent mobile handsets already implementing tilt and vibration detection using their built-in cameras. Meanwhile, the new Sony Ericsson phone will also reportedly have a games-oriented UI and style as well as other technical innovations.

Will this new gaming phone end up as a potential PSP competitor? Sony Ericsson has already built a good reputation with its Cyber-shot and Walkman phones, while the PSP is expected to enjoy higher sales numbers this month when the PSP Slim hits.

What do you guys think about this possible competitor? Leave a comment below and share your thoughts.

Sony's patent for the PSP Phone - Image 1The New York Post has put up a few more bits of info on Sony's rumored PSP phone. You guys will remember that we posted about the company getting a patent for it last week.

According to the New York Post, Sony has reportedly signed a deal with UK carrier BT Mobile. The deal includes bringing advanced multimedia communication features such as video chat and messaging to the PSP handheld system.

Analysts are also linking the PSP phone to possible moves by Sony to protect Sony Ericsson, its mobile communications arm and one of the company's few thriving departments. Apple's iPhone would be a threat to the Sony Ericsson Walkman, and coming out with a PSP phone could boost sales of both Sony Ericsson and the company's gaming division.

a PSP phone might be coming up - Image 1Rumor has it that Sony is set to make more gaming phones through the Sony Ericsson line. But don't get too excited just yet, it's just talk (for now at least), what with all the success of the Playstation Portable and all...

Come to think of it, such a move will be very logical for the electronics giant Sony. The PSP is considered a success, and there has been a measured increase in support of the mobile gaming platform. Already, Sony's Cybershot and Walkman phones pack a lot of media features, boasting of a PSP-like interface. The next big move might be an all-out PSP phone.

Some very excited sources say that after the Cybershot and the Walkman phone, which do take after Sony's great ideas, a PSP phone will come out eventually - sort of like being part of the line. People wonder, though if a gaming mobile unit is ever going to take off or not, like the not-so-successful Nokia N-gage. Then again, if this comes out, it'll be a PSP - and a phone!

SONYWho wouldn't forget the good old Walkman you used to tote around with when you were younger? Back then, it seemed as if it was THE gadget. Since its release in 1979, Sony has been riding the waves of success.

Now that Sony has turned 60 this year, writer Yuri Kageyama poses this question: Is Sony losing its magic touch? According to Kageyama, Sony seems focused on producing ultra-luxurious products that are conforming less and less to consumers' wants and needs.

One such example was the Qualia line of luxury products released three years ago, which included a "$3,300 digital camera and a $13,000 audio console that automatically centered a compact disc regardless of how carelessly it was tossed into the player." Kageyama says that products such as those widen the gap between Sony and consumers. It seems that consumers are more after practicality than luxury, even if the said products were made by an established name in the business.

However, if you go by the numbers, Sony hasn't entirely lost the plot. In fact, this year, things are looking up for the Japanese company - they earned $276 million for its first fiscal quarter, not a spectacular figure but still a turnaround from their $65.2 million loss last year. Also, Sony President Ryoji Chubachi believes that their TV sets and portable music players are still number one. To ensure this, revamps were made, such as bringing Apple's Tim Schaff to develop its software, and cooperating with Samsung Electronics to work on light crystal displays for TV sets.

Moreover, Sony is now lending an ear to its consumers (which resulted to pulling out the Qualia line) and maintains a "full scope of its business."  With its motto, "Sony United," the company strives for more inter-connectivity with its other departments, a lesson learned after a mishap with the production of its digital music player (which initially supported ATRAC3 files instead of the MP3 format, which doesn't have protection against illicit copying) which could have been prevented if the software designers maintained strong communication lines with the product designers.

So is Sony still the king in the biz? We really can't tell just yet. How about you, what do you think?

Cell phonees from www.esato.com

According to the Q2 2006 Global Handset Market Share Update Report (now that's a handful to type), Nokia and Motorola took the sales figures for a record 55 percent combines during the quarter. This report also comes with some incite from the people who brought it to you.

Neil Mawston, the Associate Director of the Wireless Device Strategies service at Strategy Analytics, said that if Motorola could keep the pace and continue with its average annual growth of 52%, it would overtake Nokia in the first half next year. If that happens, pressure would be put on Nokia to improve their mid- and entry-level phones.

Chris Ambrosio, Director of the Wireless Device Strategies service, spoke about Sony Ericsson - which, according to him, has found a balance between product design and product relevence with it's Walkman brand. This has resulted in record highs for the company...a good feat especially since they have struggled with this in the past. If they can keep it up, they will have some great growth in the 1st half of 2007.

Some other stuff that happened this quarter includes Sony's Ericsson Line jumping back to fourth for the first time in two years (people seem to love those new Walkman phones) with an increase in the gap between Motorola and Samsung, which is now at its widest point since 1999. How good is your cellphone company doing?
