Nokia's Mark Ollila, the guy in charge of games for the N-Gage, said in
an interview that the company is looking at cross-platform games and
user-generated content. Nokia is aiming for games that can run on both
PC and the mobile gaming device.Project White Rock, the product of Nokia's collaboration with studio Redlynx, is supposed to be playable on both PC and N-gage, and is expected to deliver multiplayer game experience like in MMORPGs. It utilizes the SNAP technology to connect players as they travel in an immersive world with hundreds of lines of recorded dialogue. Another game in the works is hoping to attract players into creating their own content. "For one of the titles we are working on we are looking at the possibility of letting players create a game and sharing that experience with others," Ollila said. He also mentioned that the idea is to build a community around the N-gage service. Ollila continued, "one of the things we're emphasising with the N-Gage platform is the one SKU across various devices and the other thing that we're emphasising is building up community." Apparently, Nokia is taking a new approach to N-gage games development by focusing on the software. The company wants developers to feel comfortable when making games by offering one SKU to worry about for all N-series handsets. "We're exploring the cross-platform side of things - your friend might not have a Nokia handset but you still want to play with them," Ollila added. We should be able to see this concept in action when the new N-gage service goes live come November 2 later this year. |

In a major attempt to hook gamers besides those with N-Gage into its fold, Nokia is working on an unrevealed multi-format game that will run on both the PC and N-Gage. Temporarily named "Project White Rock", Nokia is working on integrating Sega Dreamcast's SNAP technology that enables game devices to work together with PCs into the game.Nokia believes that such a move will innovate the concept of mobile gaming. While attempting to reach out to both mobile and PC gamers with a single game can be quite a risk, Nokia believes this will pay off if the company is able to pull off this project without a hitch. "Project White Rock" developer RedLynx is giving only out a few gameplay details at this point, such as the game having over a thousand lines of spoken dialogue. However, Pocket Gamer was told that N-Gage's upcoming title will not be an RPG game. Game producer Scott Foe will be at the helm of Nokia's ambitious project. Foe was the manager of Sega Dreamcast's online gaming titles, and he also oversaw the development of the first mobile MMOG, Pocket Kingdom: Own the World, making him an suitable choice for the position. More updates as they come along, so stay tuned here at QJ! |
