Sprint to offer the BlackBerry 8830 by next month - Image 1For the typical globetrotter, a smartphone is perhaps one of the best investments one can make. Having said that, Sprint is now offering the BlackBerry 8830 to mobile users who need that extra "oomph" in their phones.

The first question most consumers would ask is how much will it cost. Well Sprint's Worldwide BlackBerry plan is available for US$ 69.99 per month and gives customers unlimited BlackBerry email and web access in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico using CDMA technology. That's a pretty good deal considering what other companies charge for their plans.

Of course, if you already own a CDMA-based BlackBerry smartphone from Sprint such as the BlackBerry 7130e or the BlackBerry 8703, you won't have to pick up a new handset since you can use the one you already have. If you do decide to pick up the BlackBerry 8830, however, it will be available next month.

It will be priced for US$ 199.99 with a two year-service agreement but you will get a US$ 100 mail-in-rebate and US$ 100 instant rebate.

The BlackBerry 8830 has a plethora of features that will make mobile phone users very happy to own one. Some of which include a speakerphone, voice activated dialing, and Bluetooth support.

The unit also sports a full QWERTY keyboard and trackball navigation. Want to know more, check out the list of features below:
  • Built-in GPS – customers can utilize applications such as Sprint Navigation, spoken and visual turn-by-turn driving directions, or BlackBerry Maps, a mapping application.
  • OnDemand - a unique application available exclusively from Sprint that delivers customized, up-to-date information such as sports, weather, news, money and movie information, all with the push of a button.
  • Phone as Modem – with the included USB cable, customers can utilize the BlackBerry 8830 as a wireless modem to extend the capabilities of the Sprint Nationwide Network to a laptop. An appropriate service plan is required.
  • Media Player – play videos, audio podcasts or music files with the built-in media player; also includes a stereo headset jack.
  • MicroSD slot – allows expandable memory to store music and video files.

Given all those, you'll probably be thinking it can't get any better. Well, they're also the first company to offer AOL messenger service, so again,  that extra "oomph" you're looking for is definitely in this phone. When it rolls out next month, check it out and see if it's something you'll need for your busy lifestyle.

Zune Phone - Image 1An analysis of the patent granted to Microsoft by the US Patent and Trademark Office published on the 12th of April, 2007 indicates that the Zune Phone's main battle cry may very well be ease of use. The patent granted seems to hint that a less cluttered screen may be the key for mainstream users to catch on to the product when it finally ships.

It's still unclear whether the Zune Phone intends to give Apple's iPhone a run for its money. The only thing certain at the moment is the fact that other than mobile communications, the Zune Phone will offer a multifunctional core design. That is, it's likely that this gadget will have the qualities of a mobile phone, a PDA, and maybe even a mini-media player.

One of the more intriguing properties described by Microsoft is that the product will enable users to monitor content and data coming in simply by watching the GUI. Much of the patent's contents are still pretty vague, and we all know that the final product often has a lot more to it than what the papers describe. On that note, we'll update you as soon as new details on the Zune Phone is forthcoming.

Deeda Pi - the next-generation mobile contender up against Apple iPhone? - Image 1Now we were pretty skeptical ourselves when we first heard of this mobile phone making a ruckus online, but when we viewed the specs on this mini mobile gem, our noses bled. The features touted by this model of the Deeda next-gen mobile line is tantalizing enough to probably stake a claim to be an iPhone contender.

Now we know "Deeda" isn't as catchy a brand as "Apple," but then names have little to do with many things nowadays. It's like the computer hardware industry: new name, new game. But since the Deeda Pi phone (interestingly rhyming with "iPhone") caters to a wide range of users, it just might be safe to say that this smartphone, learning from the Wii, is handing itself over as a broad market item.

Of course, people have been skeptical as to how this phone could ever kill Steve Jobs' iconic i-products, but since Deeda hasn't featured any Hollywood actor in its publicity stunts, we'll give it a chance to strut its stuff. It's got stuff for mobile gamers: vibration touch feedback, a joystick accessory and a 3.6-inch true widescreen LCD.

It's got stuff for the mobile geek: custom OS, device customization through the OS, 2-megapixel camera, WiFi, UPnP, and expandable mass memory. And it's got stuff for the music lover on the go: 60 GB of memory, media player with high-quality audio speakers, two memory slots for SD and MMC cards, and a universal media extender.

While many like to be skeptical of such a device, we wouldn't want to bar such a beauty from entering the market. Crab mentality isn't our apple pie. Open-source makes for lots of possibilities for this hopeful device, and when Deeda does ship this out to the open, we'll be looking for it - as long as it doesn't evaporate into thin air, of course.

iPhone knock-off - Image 1Mimicry may be the greatest form of flattery for some, but we doubt that Apple is flattered with this iPod styled mobile phone.  Engadget reports about this iPhone knock off that is currently being sold for roughly £75 (around $150). It looks nothing like the iPhone and to the misinformed consumer, this will look like a really sweet deal.

The iPhone knock-off comes with an iPod like white finish and a Mac OS X wallpaper. A quick visit to the mobile's media player will treat you to a strange Quicktime skin. Also take a good, hard look at the "Apple" logo of iPhone wannabe - yup it has an extra leaf. Buyer beware.

Lots of Apple products have been ripped off and sold for a cheaper price. There was this iPod Nano knock off found in China and there was also this cheap iPod Shuffle wannabe that surfaced months ago. Mimicry may be the greatest form of flattery, too bad it's illegal most of the time.

google videoThe whole point of technology is to make information accessible to everyone. And that's the beauty of it. If before, you feel frustrated that you have nothing else to do and you just want to Google but you can't, well, now you can shake off that bored ol' feeling. Srobbin.com gives us a step by step on how to access Google video from your mobile. And it's actually simple.

If your mobile phone has an XHTML-compliant browser, enough storage to hold large files, fast connection, and with an application capable of playing AVI files, then you're all set to go. Now, the first two requirements are an absolute need. But for the other two, there appears to be some leeway for you to get around to it.

You might start off by getting a broadband package, since there's a whole bunch of providers catering to that need, anyway. As for the application to play the AVI files, it is installable. The Core Pocket Media Player is one such application, and it's been said to work reasonably well, and is easy to install.

Now, the video. All you have to do is to direct your XHTML-compliant phone browser to http://srobbin.com/mobilevideo. After running a search, click on a title to view the video. After completing the download, TCMP automatically opens with the video-preloaded. Click play, and voila!

Now, wasn't that easy? Just a little warning though, before you go surfing. The search results have been limited to videos under four minutes, so you might want to carefully choose which videos you'd actually download. Remember, you still need your phone's memory for some other use.

k610iIn an attempt to get more gamers into their market, Orange is now offering their latest Sony Ericsson K610i with free game demos from Sega.

Apparently, the said handset was designed specifically for gamers so Orange decided to include game demos such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Chu Chu Rocket to be available for free download. Sega wallpapers and ringtones are nonetheless also available.

The phone itself is not that bad, with a 2megapixel camera, media player, memory Stick Micro support. The K610i also has push email to keep you updated on incoming email, and allows for PC synchronisation. The 3G handset comes in three colors: Misty White, Urban Silver, and Evening Red.

If you do decide to download one of the games ('coz you just can't get enough of Sonic), Orange will give you a £10 money-off voucher (that's roughly $19 for us) for you to spend on downloading a Sega game when you purchase their K610i.

6215iVerizon Wireless has recently included Nokia's 6215i clamshell in their lineup. A quick glance at the phone's features won't probably get you stirring but it tries to make up for its outdated camera and connectivity features by providing support for CDMA networks on the 800 and 1900MHz bands.

The new clamshell also uses 1xRTT for data and supports Verizon's Get It Now service which allows consumers to easily modify their ringtones, wallpapers, and games. The clamshell's Mobile Web 2.0 application also allows users to browse the web, check their mail, and instant messaging with friends.

The Nokia 6215i sports a VGA camera that has digital zoom and allows users to share images with friends via the Pix Place application included in the phone. A big con in getting this phone though is that it doesn't have an MP3 media player. It also scores low on connectivity as it's not Bluetooth nor Infrared-enabled.

The phone allows for up to nine days standby time and 3.75 hours of talk time and now available for $49 dollars from the Verizon Wireless website with a two-year service agreement. Whether this clamshell is something you can see yourself using for two years, you decide.

Asus MyPal A639

Asus has yet again outsmarted themselves with the newly launched MyPal A639 GPS PDA, a handheld device that combines the features and utility of a satellite navigation device with the functions of your good old PDA.

As you can see from the picture, there's a swivel antenna that enables the device to be viewed in portrait or landscape format which means that your device will always be parallel to the sky. The options for connectivity are also quite impressive and extensive, having GPS, WLAN 802.11b and g, Bluetooth, and full sync capability with PCs.

As compared to the earlier released P525 (which has only 128MB of memory), the MyPal A639 comes with 1GB of flash memory, making it one of the few Windows Mobile 5.0 devices with the highest onboard storage capacity. If 1GB is not enough for you to store your maps and other data in, the SD expansion slot makes sure that you never run out of memory. This gadget also has a built-in microphone for the Voice Recorder, which you can use for your more important duties such as recording the tracks for your very own album aptly entitled "Songs in the Shower."

MyPal 639 is powered by an Intel Xscale 416MHz processor and the bundled software includes Windows Media Player Mobile, Pocket Outlook, Internet Explorer Mobile, Word Mobile, and Calendar.
