Samsung BBT measuring phone - Image 1Don't get any ideas now but Samsung has just filed a patent for a phone that can detect the chances of a lady getting pregnant. The phone calculates how far the lady is in the ovulation process, allowing them to know how safe it is to have sex. It would be very interesting to know what inspired such an idea.

The phone works by using a distance sensor (either laser or ultrasound based) to measure how far the ear is from the phone, and an infrared ray temperature sensor will measure process temperatures inside the eardrum.

The phone then translates the data taken from the ear to read the Basal Body Temperature of the body. The BBT data is essential in monitoring the cyclic ovulation of females.

It's a step safer than other measures for safe sex to be sure, but perhaps it wasn't wise to directly associate sex with a phone. Pavlov's dog effect will not bode well in this situation.

Kamerflage - Image 1The human eye can only see the colors within the visible spectrum of light. What that basically means is that there's a bunch of other colors we can't see, but our cameras can though. Now new technology called Kameraflage is aiming to use it as their invisible ink.

Kameraflage basically puts in an extra layer of images - within the color range human eyes can't see - where it becomes visible through the lens of a digital camera. (That includes cameras built into mobile phones too!

This actually opens up a whole new method of advertising and capitalization in a market that was once invisible (literally). Kameraflage has some pretty good ideas on how it can be used:
  • Stopping movie piracy: If people record movies straight out from the cinema, their cameras will also record that extra layer of content, permanently tagging that recording as a piracy.
  • Advertising: Now you can advertise in places where it would have been inappropriate before, like a museum. Now people don't have to see it unless they intentionally point a camera at it.
  • Fashion: Uniforms? Boo. Now you can spice it up (secretly though) with the new Kamerflage technology.
So it's un-x-ray vision?

Signature CobraLet's see...What can 300 thousand American dollars buy you? Well, lotsa PSPs, Wiis, and PS3s; a nice sports car; a decent home; a relaxing holiday getaway...and a cellphone. Huh? What?!

Yes, you read it right. Apparently cellphone maker and Nokia subsidiary, Vertu, is now taking orders for their latest contraption, Vertu's Signature Cobra. The Cobra isn't a new cellular technology that's going to revolutionize communication, it is a luxurious thingamajig encrusted with precious rocks by French jeweler, Boucheron. One pear-cut diamond, one round white diamond, two emerald eyes, and 439 rubies. Price tag - US$ 310,00.

Too expensive? Vertu is also coming up with an entry level Vertu phone called the Signature Python for the lower price of US$ 115, 000. Only eight stupid lucky people will be able to possess the Cobra phone, but there are others who could buy the cheaper variant. Does it have Bluetooth, Infrared, camera, or an mp3 player?

We don't think so. But then again, you have that bejewelled cobra right there, we're sure nobody would ask about its features.

SE Z310Aside from gaming consoles, one good Christmas gift is a brand new mobile phone. With lots of brands and models to choose from, your Christmas gift-giving ain't going wrong with these thingamajigs. And joining the growing family of Sony Ericsson cellular phones is the Z310, a mirror-finish clamshell phone.

It has the usual features - VGA camera, Infrared, Bluetooth, SMS and MMS, and WAP. But what makes this phone a stand-out is that its front icon display is integrated into the design, hidden discreetly beneath the surface until a message or a call is received. Eye-catching colored light effects are also at hand so as you could assign them to your contacts and you would know at first sight who's trying to reach you.

This phone comes in three very individual colours: Jet Set Black for those yearning for a classic look, Blush Bronze, or Lush Pink for the girls. It would be available in selected markets from Q1 2007 and for now, there is no word about its price tag. But still, functionality and great looks, what more could ask for?

InfrareDSWe are all quite familiar with homebrew applications like games and programs for our DS. What we quite don't know is that somewhere in the DS universe (quite specifically in The Netherlands), Infrared function is being developed. And with 60% of all the work already done, it is fast nearing completion.

Dubbed InfrareDS, the idea was thought of by Mark (frozenone23@hotmail.com). And the whole project is exactly just that: it adds an IrDA to the Nintendo DS in just few minutes, allowing the user to send images and sounds from a mobile phone and vice versa.. As of now, InfrareDS is compatible with Sony Ericsson (T310, K750i),  Panasonic X60 and Nokia 8850.

Although it has not been tested yet for DS lite, InfrareDS features direct compatibility to all firmware versions of NDS, not to mention its high speed transmission capability. Currently, Mark is working on the touchscreen function and making a graphical interface.

We thank Kravos for this exciting heads up.

Digital Cyclone, Inc., an innovator of wireless applications for mobile devices, has announced that their My-Cast 5.0 mobile weather service can now track down tropical storms and hurricanes. 6215iVerizon Wireless has recently included Nokia's 6215i clamshell in their lineup. A quick glance at the phone's features won't probably get you stirring but it tries to make up for its outdated camera and connectivity features by providing support for CDMA networks on the 800 and 1900MHz bands.

The new clamshell also uses 1xRTT for data and supports Verizon's Get It Now service which allows consumers to easily modify their ringtones, wallpapers, and games. The clamshell's Mobile Web 2.0 application also allows users to browse the web, check their mail, and instant messaging with friends.

The Nokia 6215i sports a VGA camera that has digital zoom and allows users to share images with friends via the Pix Place application included in the phone. A big con in getting this phone though is that it doesn't have an MP3 media player. It also scores low on connectivity as it's not Bluetooth nor Infrared-enabled.

The phone allows for up to nine days standby time and 3.75 hours of talk time and now available for $49 dollars from the Verizon Wireless website with a two-year service agreement. Whether this clamshell is something you can see yourself using for two years, you decide.

macbookvsdell

By this time you pro'lly know the MacBook has earned a reputation for being too hot too handle - literally. It has been reported to cause leg burn and some guy even used his MacBook to cook an egg just to make a point. A Dell laptop, on the other hand, turned into a spectacular fire ball in an office in Japan during a  board meeting.

Sounds like a battle brewing? Krische thought so and set up an experiment to see which of the two gets to wear the Jalapeno crown. The test was simple. He played a full-length DVD movie on both machines while running on batteries. All other conditions were kept the same. From the room temperature to the space between the laptops and the table on which they were placed. Temperature was measured using an infrared thermometer from the top-side and bottom-side of the laptops after an hour of playtime, and at the end of the 1 hour and 45 minute movie.

The results: The MacBook runs significantly hotter than the Dell in certain spots but the average temperature is about the same as Dell's. Krische thinks the MacBook is a great alternative to the PC anyways despite running a little bit hotter. After all the MacBook lacks the built-in cooling fans of the Dell, he says. By the way, he already owns a MacBook which makes him an Apple Person. Any PC Person for the rebuttal?

M600 M600+ is the newest flagship of this Taiwanese company, E-TEN. This baby retains the elegant design and impressive core hardware features that made the original M600 a must-have among both the media and consumers. Aside from that, it also has increased 256MB memory capacity, an improved 2.0 mega-pixels camera, and updated software including support for Push email services, to make a great Pocket PC Phone package even better.

The E-TEN M600+ is built around Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC. It is powered by a Samsung S3C2440 processor running at 400MHz. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are both built in, and while there is no hardware button dedicated to controlling these, one of the many, many software extras E-TEN throws into this device is a Wireless Manager that allows you to turn both on and off and also manage your SIM, although adding up Infrared would be nice, the presence of Wi-Fi sorta makes up for it.

This baby looks good and all, and seems up to the corporate challenge. The only problem with this contraption is its really hefty price tag - it will cost you roughly U.S. $755. The price tag is really hefty since you can buy other smartphones with the same bang for buck. If they wanna make a killing at the markets, they better re-think their price tag.

Whoever said you'd be content with just one is a total hypocrite. Sure you like your black Sony Ericsson K750i because it looks sleek and elegant and it functions well, but when you look at the newest version of the K750i, you'll want it too.

Sony Ericsson's Oxidized Black K750i was originally launched January of last year. As the company apparently thinks people will want to have another taste of this mobile phone (and thinks, too, that it needs freshening), they released the K750i in Crimson Red. I must admit, with features such as a 2-megapixel camera (with auto-focus and photo light), a 34MB memory, Bluetooth, Infrared and cable connectivity, and a music player, you'd be tempted to grab this other phone too.

But then again, it'll only be available in the Carphone Warehouse in the UK, so good luck to you getting your hands on this version. Also, Sony Ericsson is preparing to launch its newest phones, the K610i and the K800i. This might mean the Crimson Red K710i will be pretty cheap.

So will you consider picking one of these up, or will you sit pretty and wait for the new units to come out? After all, they'll have more features to compete against other 3G phones in the market.
