iPhone - Image 1

If you haven't had enough iPhone news and details, then we've got some more for you. German Mac site, Macwelt, was able to squeeze in some more iPhone details from Apple. The details ranges from the technical aspects (such as, where would the OS be stored?) to the more shallow bits (could my iTunes songs be used as ringtones?). Well here are some of the bits we have found.

On the issue of where the OS is gonna be stored. The Macwelt article mentioned that the OS would be stored alongside your music, but fret not, because Apple says that it will just occupy one half of a gigabyte. So you still have 3.5 or 7.5 GB room for your pics and music.

Apple would also have the final word as to what software would be installed on the iPhone. Also, you will not be able to purchase some iTunes Store goodies directly from your iPhone. Probably, Apple and Cingular didn't see eye-to-eye about this issue.

Now, the mind bugging question still remains unanswered, "would I be able to use my iTunes song as a ringtone?" The answer my friend, is no. You cannot use them as you alarm clock tones as well. Aww...that's too bad. In the Macwelt interview, they also found out that Apple will not let users use VoIP on the iPhone.

The German site also squeezed this particular info about plugins. Apple says that there will be as many enabled plugins as possible and Flash and Java will be enabled.

Hmm, I don't know about you but I'm still pretty bummed about that iTunes-ringtone tidbit. To read the interview, click on the read-link below for a Google-translated version.

i200 - Image 1 i200 - Image 2

Lucky Asians, they get the chance to take a peek, and perhaps bring home a g-smart PDA-phone from Gigabyte Communications called the i200. Now, we haven't really seen so many PDA-phones coming from the Taiwanese manufacturer Gigabyte, since they specialize in computer component parts. However, at the 3GSM Asia World Congress in Singapore, they did showcase a bunch of new gadgets of which the i200 was a standout.

The i200 packs a lot of punch, with features like onboard DVB-H and DVH-T receivers, 2.69-inch VGA touchscreen display, and a Crossbow (Windows Mobile) compatible OS.

But what we recognize as most Gigabyte-ish is the fact that most of their handsets feature ambient noise generator. You can customize your background noise so that the receiver of your call would perceive you're in a party when you're really just snoozing at home. The DVB-H and DVH-T receivers let you receive TV broadcasts and even record it -- with 512MB memory to boot. Throw in a few more features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS capabilities and perhaps a bigger hard drive capacity, and this PDA-phone will make its way to the U.S. in no time. We're looking forward to it!

Gigabyte hasn't revealed the pricing for the i200 yet, but it's set to launch in the market early 2007.

HiPADAs the market for ultra-portable computers continues to expand and manufacturers scramble to meet demand while also trying to keep consumers interested in their products, originality and uniqueness are sometimes lost and products start to blend into a sea of blandness.

Leave it to Korea to buck current trends and release an ultra-portable that is truly without peer. The HiPAD (or HiPDA I've seen it written both ways on the same site!) is a tablet PC, or at least it looks like one. At the heart of the machine is an AMD Geode LX-800 CPU; a processor that is a compromise between power and efficiency.

With an available Gigabyte for memory (256MB standard) the processor will not have memory bottlenecks to slow it down. The most unique thing about the HiPAD has got to be it's ability to run both Windows XP (tablet edition) and Windows CE. The touch screen allows you to take advantage of the best features included with XP tablet edition while still giving you the option to run "normal" PC software designed for Windows XP.

WiFI, DMB and HSDPA provide connectivity and media services for the device. PCMCIA and CF slots provide effective expansion capabilities to the little portable that hint at some interesting possibilities. With Windows CE underpinning the media player and PDA-like functionality and XP tablet edition taking care of the tasks that involve heavy lifting (or heavy processing), it's almost like having two devices in one.

There is also a camera and navigation software embedded within the device. This hybrid-like device has a 10.4 inch touch screen, is one inch thick and weighs 2.9 pounds. For those who care about looks, the HiPAD isn't at all bad looking either! It has a sleek, smart design that only hints at the amount of productivity it can help you to achieve.

There's no word on cost as of this post. The amount of features packed into this tiny portable make it attractive, but price is always an issue. Hopefully, we'll see a version of the HiPAD in the US. American consumers would go crazy for a device like this if it was marketed well. (hint!)

ati

In today's press release ATI representatives officially introduced the new flagship of the company's GPU line. The X1950 XTX sports a gigabyte of GDDR 4 memory (running at 2 GHz) and a redesigned cooling system designed to allow the unit to run quietly under load while maintaining a suitable temperature range.

The X1950 XTX uses the PCI express standard and is based upon a 648MHz graphics chip. The X1950 family of GPUs will offer power that was previously unavailable by utilizing crossfire technology. To take advantage of this technology you must have a compatible motherboard.

Crossfire technology allows users to install and use two X1950s on the same board instead of just one. For those who plan on becoming early adopters of Windows Vista (when it finally comes out), the X1950 is "ready to deliver the premium Windows Vista experience'4' with exceptional driver stability and performance." For games and Multimedia applications this card is designed to exceed your needs and expectations.

"The Radeon X1950 gives gamers exactly what they want - super high frame rates and the best looking games possible, with image quality features that can't be found anywhere else" said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager, PC Business, ATI Technologies Inc.

"With the new Radeon X1950, ATI is introducing new technology in GDDR4, setting the performance benchmark even higher with the ultimate gaming solution available today."Marketing and hype aside, the X1950 XTX looks to be a solid entry from a reputable company and it's more than worth a second look, if you can afford it. The new card is expected to retail at around $450USD.
Early impressions from lucky first adopters have been mostly positive, leading to the impression that ATI's new flagship will live up to it's title.

gsmartGIGABYTE Communications has unveiled the gSmart i128 smartphone designed for the multilingual lot. Powered by Windows Mobile 5.0, the next-gen mobile phone allows Internet browsing and Windows Mobile document viewing in 98 languages - all made possible with Alta Vista Babel Fish translation service. If you're just bilingual like me, you'll find the smartphone's real-time translation-on-the-go feature a very helpful way to gauge what's being said about you by your Navajo-speaking friends (if Navajo's included in the language list, that is).

The gSmart i128 isn't all about multilingual features though. It's one power-packed multimedia phone that sports a 2.1 megapixel camera and allows for analog TV watching with its retractable antenna on its 256K color TFT 2.4-inch screen. It has a built-in 128MB ROM and 64MB RAM. If that's not enough, you can always use the miniSD expansion slot. The 130-gram smartphone doesn't skimp on connectivity either, as it offers efficient and speedy mobile internet access via Wi-Fi and GPRS.

The gSmart i128 is an all-in-one smartphone that'll have business travellers speaking in tongues! No word on pricing and availability, but as always, we'll keep you posted.

If none of the portable media devices available in the US market appeal to you, then it's time to take the next plane out... To Taiwan! That's where you'll find the GIGABYTE g-Smart i, the feature-packed smartphone that boasts a 2.1 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, radio tuner, and PAL/NTSC TV tuner. This pocket wonder is powered by Windows Mobile 5 and supports MP3, MPEG4, 3GPP, and WMV file formats. It also has a detachable antenna that can be plugged on the side of the phone when it's time to watch TV. Just don't forget to remove the antenna when you have to use the phone (unless you want to create a silly fashion statement).

You may be put off by the orange and white color combination that's sure to get the "Sony Ericsson Walkman copycat" tag, but there's no denying that the the GIGABYTE g-Smart i is one power-packed unit that takes portable media entertainment to the next level.
