the new iMac - Image 1

The Apple Summer Mac product conference is already rolling hot with Steve Jobs manning the show. As expected, his keynote address is filled with surprising unveiling of new Apple projects and the "everybody saw this coming" types. Tab this one under the second category - as predicted and whispered around various boards the past few weeks, Apple is giving us brand new iMacs.

Sporting a retroish look, the sleek new iMacs are made of aluminum and glass. It comes in 20- and 24-inched versions, each equipped with the usual but impressive specs such as up to  2.4GHz Core 2 Extreme processor, up to 4GB of memory, ATI Radeon HD graphics card, up to 1TB of hard drive storage. 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.0 built-in. There's also the usual compliment of ports like USB 2.0, Firewire 400/800, a slot loading SuperDrive, iSight camera etc.

What's also worth noting is that the oft-rumored new keyboard for the iMacs turns out to be true, with Steve Jobs himself confirming it. Boasting of large spacing and flat keys, Apple seems to be aiming to give the iMac users the laptop feel while typing. iMac purists seem to be a bit skeptic with the move, but let's all wait and see what happens. The 20-inch iMac goes for US$ 1,199 each (add three hundred bucks more for a processor and graphics enhancements), while the 24-inch monster demands US$ 1,799 per unit.

gpuAllow us for a while to postpone your trip to fantasy land so that we can all get real. You are all aware of companies nVidia, AMD and its subsidiary ATI Technologies, right? Okay for the love of God, the three are major suppliers and manufacturers of GPU. As we all know, we can't get any leveling or questing done if not for these graphics processing units.

Interestingly, nVidia and AMD are currently under fire with the Department of Justice slapping them with a barrage of anti-trust actions. In case you are wondering why, the two were recently accused of conspiracy to take control of the graphics market. Here is what the plaintiffs have to say:

The allegation is the defendants and co-conspirators have engaged in a contract combination, trust or conspiracy, the effect of which was to raise the prices at which they sold graphics processing units and cards to artificially inflated levels.

Executives of the company are also alleged to have had meetings and conversations to discuss pricing of graphics processing units and cards in the U.S.

If these allegations are proven to be correct, then the two are guilty of creating a cartel. The latter are definitely a no-no in a country that is back-boned by democracy and free trade. This is rather weird because not so long ago, the two released a GPU compatible with DirectX 10, the only one in the world.

In today's press release ATI representatives officially introduced the new flagship of the company's GPU line. The X1950 XTX sports a gigabyte of GDDR 4 memory (running at 2 GHz) and a redesigned cooling system designed to allow the unit to run quietly under load while maintaining a suitable temperature range.

The X1950 XTX uses the PCI express standard and is based upon a 648MHz graphics chip. The X1950 family of GPUs will offer power that was previously unavailable by utilizing crossfire technology. To take advantage of this technology you must have a compatible motherboard.

Crossfire technology allows users to install and use two X1950s on the same board instead of just one. For those who plan on becoming early adopters of Windows Vista (when it finally comes out), the X1950 is "ready to deliver the premium Windows Vista experience'4' with exceptional driver stability and performance." For games and Multimedia applications this card is designed to exceed your needs and expectations.

"The Radeon X1950 gives gamers exactly what they want - super high frame rates and the best looking games possible, with image quality features that can't be found anywhere else" said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager, PC Business, ATI Technologies Inc.

"With the new Radeon X1950, ATI is introducing new technology in GDDR4, setting the performance benchmark even higher with the ultimate gaming solution available today."Marketing and hype aside, the X1950 XTX looks to be a solid entry from a reputable company and it's more than worth a second look, if you can afford it. The new card is expected to retail at around $450USD.
Early impressions from lucky first adopters have been mostly positive, leading to the impression that ATI's new flagship will live up to it's title.

jive notebookMany decades ago, no one would have bought a "jive" anything. For those of you below 80, "jive" means the same as today's "b.s." But times have changed since then. Who knew Korea would be a major electronics powerhouse? Korea's Haseenote is proud to present its Jive W205R.  The notebook has a 12 inch (1280×800) display screen, a 1.66 Ghz Core Duo T2050, 1GB RAM, 80GB SATA, DVD Multi burner, and 64MB ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. It's achiles' heel is its video card which, according to reports, is not the most powerful. But if that (and the word "Jive") isn't an issue with you, you can get the Jive notebook for around $1, 070.

AMDTwo weeks ago, CPU manufacturer AMD bought GPU-maker ATI for a couple of billion dollars, but it seems like it wasn't for the latter's brand recognition at all. They're dropping the ATi brand, so no more ATI Radeons but perhaps AMD Radeons.

A publication called PCPro asked AMD-employee Richard Baker if the popular product is on the verge of biting the dust (Radeon). He said answered "we haven't made any final decisions yet, but I'd personally be very surprised if we dropped any of those product names. The ATI company name is definitely going, though."

Baker surprisingly said that the buyout will not really be a merger but more of a takeover, which basically means that AMD is boss. He said the name ATi should go, as AMD owns that brand and company now. "The company is being bought, so it's fairly standard that the name should go, as it's becoming a part of AMD."

A worker from ATI (well, it's AMD now), Chris Hook, said he doesn't have any attachment to the ATI brand anyway, but it's more about the products themselves. He said they're still discussing this though. More about this as we get it.

NEC LavieNEC seems to be willing to stick it out to the competition as they have just released their new set Turion 64 X2 laptop goodies, which will be part of their LaVie line of laptops. To go right down to the nitty-gritty of these machines, they are equipped with 15.4-inch 1,280 x 800 displays, ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 integrated graphics, and dual-layer DVD burning across the board.

Of course there's also the usual Firewire, four USB 2.0 ports, a PC card slot, multi-card reader, gigabit Ethernet and 802.11a/b/g WiFi in NEC's latest producrs. They will come in two choices, if you have some dough to spare, you could get the LaVie L line which will cost you ¥210,000 or roughly $1,819 USD. It will have 100GB HDD, 768MB of RAM (2GB max) and WMCE '05, powered by an AirTV external TV tuner.

Too expensive? Then maybe you oughta consider the entry level LaVie G type L option, a build-type order affair that will cost you ¥125,000 or $1,082. These babies will be available in Japan starting August 11, no word on availability and sale date elsewhere.

If you think these features sounds good and the price tag ain't that high, then prepare for the downside of these contraptions. If you're the type who travels with your laptop, you might get a little disappointed with the Lavie laptops because their battery life willl only cover you for roughly 2 hours -- and for an almost 7-pound laptop, that might be quite a turnoff for you. But then again, you will be the best judge of that.
