Phoenix Wright team to bring more games - Image 1

Two new games are lined up from the Singapore-based dev team who worked on the Phoenix Wright ports to the mobile platform. Mikoishi will be showing off their new titles at the Games Convention Asia on September 6 to 8 of this year. Sorry. No. Not Phoenix Wright games. But they definitely look promising enough to hold their own ground despite the courtroom big shot eating up the market.

SteamIron. This title will be spanning across various platforms; its epic journey will start on 3G mobile phones later this year, with other installments on the Nintendo DS and PC platforms to follow. It's a sci-fi fantasy game that is set far into the future in an alternate timeline where electronic revolution never happened. Think futuristic technology (space ships and satellite radars included), but all of which are designed in a retro fashion. The game isn't called SteamIron for nothing. It probably hints on something very much like a steampunk world.

DropCast. Mikoishi's DropCast will follow the life of Ingrid and her living, breathing plush dolls. While a series of casual games are planned across different platforms, the first installment will drop in as an action-puzzler on the Nintendo DS early next year.

Specific details about gameplay for both titles are close to none, however, if there's one thing to keep an eye on, it's that upcoming game convention in Singapore where Mikoishi will finally reveal their games. And with that, watch this space!

Acer not to offer Linux-based laptops in UK, Dell weighing its options - Image 1One representative from Acer recently claimed that they will not be releasing any laptops pre-loaded with Linux in UK because there is not enough demand in the market. As you've probably heard, this kind of Acer laptops are currently gaining popularity with the latest versions released in Singapore.

It should be remembered as well that Dell began offering computer models with Linux-based OS Ubuntu in the U.S. last May which was warmly accepted by the ever-growing Linux community. Anyway, it seems that our UK friends who prefer Acer computers will not be joining the fray anytime soon. The representative explained,

Acer models with Ubuntu pre-loaded are available at the factory level. However, there is no demand for it in the UK. Therefore, those configurations are not an option for UK customers at the moment. If the demand was there, then Acer would sell it.

Currently, even Dell is not offering Linux-based laptops in UK. However, a spokesperson from the company commented that they are currently discussing plans to include UK in their distribution list.

Ruth Tang and daughter gaming - Image 1In Singapore, new generation moms prefer computer-related gifts over anything else. G3 Interractive's Lynn Oh has gone as far as to say that women really go for PSP and DS Lite games. She cited Cooking Mama and Cake Mania as two games that are easy for women to get really into.

A good example of a mom who really got into this is 60-year-old Ruth Tang. She has two children who are already working, so now she spends her time playing online computer games. She stated that "I enjoy it! In fact, I play every day for one to two hours. Sometimes when I want to play more, my daughters will say, 'No mummy, not good for you'."

She was drawn to the new hobby because of curiosity. She spied her youngest daughter playing the whole night, and decided to watch her play. Now Mrs. Tang plays video games and claims that it exercises her mind as well as her hands. (Hmm, dont'w we all use the same excuse) Her daughter speaking on her mom's new hobby:

She used to be afraid of technology. That's why I was very, very surprised when she started playing. Before that, she couldn't even hold a mouse properly. I tried to enrol her into community centre courses and everything but she just didn't like it. Nonetheless, she managed to find her own groove, which is good.

So what's in the future for Mrs. Tang? She wants a laptop. We would like to suggest getting an Intel Core 2 Duo laptop for her needs because the it is currently the preferred processor by women according to MC2's Leslie Lim.

i200 - Image 1 i200 - Image 2

Lucky Asians, they get the chance to take a peek, and perhaps bring home a g-smart PDA-phone from Gigabyte Communications called the i200. Now, we haven't really seen so many PDA-phones coming from the Taiwanese manufacturer Gigabyte, since they specialize in computer component parts. However, at the 3GSM Asia World Congress in Singapore, they did showcase a bunch of new gadgets of which the i200 was a standout.

The i200 packs a lot of punch, with features like onboard DVB-H and DVH-T receivers, 2.69-inch VGA touchscreen display, and a Crossbow (Windows Mobile) compatible OS.

But what we recognize as most Gigabyte-ish is the fact that most of their handsets feature ambient noise generator. You can customize your background noise so that the receiver of your call would perceive you're in a party when you're really just snoozing at home. The DVB-H and DVH-T receivers let you receive TV broadcasts and even record it -- with 512MB memory to boot. Throw in a few more features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS capabilities and perhaps a bigger hard drive capacity, and this PDA-phone will make its way to the U.S. in no time. We're looking forward to it!

Gigabyte hasn't revealed the pricing for the i200 yet, but it's set to launch in the market early 2007.

From the looks of it, the saga of the Dell exploding laptop is very far from over. It seems that more headaches are coming in the way of the Texas-based company way as another one of their laptops went ballistic and decided to be a flamethrower instead. After sprouting fire in a Japan conference and in a U.S. office, it seems that another Dell laptop went boom, this time it "exploded" in Singapore.

The man's laptop is a Latitude D410 model. He didn't elaborate as to what he was doing when it exploded, when it happened, or if the laptop was in use, but it is quite obvious that the damage was again brought about by its battery. We will let the pictures do the talking so you could judge the scenario for yourself. So far, Dell manages to stay mum about the issue and has not released an official statement about the matter. Maybe the reason why they won't talk is because their official investigation about the first exploding laptop is yet to be concluded.
