apple notebookLED backlit notebooks are the new fad for notebook manufacturers, the forerunners being Sony, Toshiba, Fujitsu, and Asustek. Now Apple and Hewlett Packard (HP) are going to release their models with the said technology in Q2 2007.

Even when big notebook makers are using LEDs, Taiwan LED manufacturers are unlikely to profit from the innovation, according to DigiTimes.com

The use of LED backlights has become more popular, but LED manufacturers in Taiwan would unlikely supply the demand since their LEDs simply don't cut it. The specifications of a backlit notebook is 1,680 nits, and Taiwan LED makers have yet to reach that brightness level. Patent restraints would also be a hurdle since notebook makers consider that better than cost competitiveness.

However, they will continue making the LEDs for handsets though they are constantly under pressure to be cost competitive.

Asus LogoClones. Cloning humans are illegal. Cloning sheeps are legal (in some parts of the world). Cloning Notebooks are legal and will be in the market soon. So soon it's in the last quarter of 2006.

Asustek Computer will be introducing the ASmobile brand. Screen sizes: 13.3, 14.1, 15.4 and 17 inches. Options galore, we say. The company's expecting that shipments will reach the 200,000 mark in 2006 and better in 2007. Why? Because the product aims for flexibility. Design will be light and slim. This product is targeting the DIY and desktop-replacement markets. We feel that desktop-replacement market will grow as more telecommuting jobs grow.

Will this product stop the failing cloned notebook share in the world? It was reported last August 9 that the combined share of clone notebooks in the global notebook market amounted to 14.5% in the second quarter of 2006, down from 15.7% in the first quarter. Hopefully, this move will make other cloned notebook makers develop more products. The more options, the better.

So if you'll be looking for a notebook that won' t be as pricey as the branded ones but just as good and fast, we suggest you look the ASmobile in the near future.

Mac Rumors seems to be the most apt place to keep hearing about this... though we do wish Apple would make make a definitive announcement. WWDC 2006 came and went, and we still have no official word on the mysterious Merom CPU and whether it will make an appearance on the newest MacBook release.

According to Mac Rumors and their linked report from Reg Hardware, Asustek is supposed to be making new MacBooks with the new CPU, instead of the previously used processor, known as "Yonah." All that we know so far are vague ideas of the specs of the Merom: it is supposed to go up to a max clock speed of 2.33 GHz and be a Core 2 Duo, which is meant to be more powerful than the Core Duo CPU, "Yonah."

It's genius how they're keeping tight-lipped about it and making the rumors spread to intrigue others, but too much silence is just as annoying as being wishy-washy over details and decisions.

Let's hope Apple makes up its mind and gives us all an answer soon, shall we?

Asus W2JbAsustek has been flooding the market with a range of laptops carrying the Asus brand - Ultramobile PC, a tablet PC, and even the Lamborghini-branded model. Continuing its foray into the high-end PC products, the company has released its desktop replacement laptop - the Asus W2Jb. Before you part with your hard-earned $2,200, it's best to check what users have to say about it. If you don't know anyone who has it, then PCMag's review can be just as good.

With TV-recording capabilities and 17-inch widescreen display, it's quite obvious that the W2Jb is designed for the hardcore media enthusiast. It's powered by Intel Core Duo T2600 running at speed clock 2.16 GHz, 2GB of RAM. It comes with ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 3D chip, which PCMag didn't find all too impressive when pitted against nVidia graphics. It's 120GB hard drive may not be enough to store all media files, but you can easily burn DVDs using its DVD+R DL drive. Battery life is at 2 hours and 42 minutes, quite the standard for 17-inch desktop replacements.

The verdict? PCMag gave it a 4 out of 5 (very good). Now, the only thing you need to do is find a reputable online retailer as Asus does not sell its laptops directly.
