Pink's Stupid Girls video embodying the danger of phoning while driving - Image 1Being a driver entails a lot of responsibility, not only for your own safety and your passenger's, but to other drivers and pedestrians as well. That's why we have this strong advocacy against getting behind the wheel when you've had something to drink, and if you are too tired and sleepy. Bottom line is, we want to avoid any untoward accidents that may cost you your life and others'.

Senator Carole Migden is one of those who firmly adhere to this, hence she voted for the ban of use of mobile phones that do not come with a hands-free device while driving. But irony sure has a funny way of showing up at your door. While driving, the San Francisco Democrat reportedly rear-ended a woman as she was reaching for her ringing cellphone last week. Fortunately, nobody was seriously hurt or injured.

According to recent studies on cell phone use among drivers conducted by David L. Strayer and Frank A. Drews of the University of Utah, it's not the gadget itself that distracts the drivers or is the one causing the accident. Rather, it is the conversation that results to an "inattention blindness" that leads to this unfortunate event. Having a normal conversation with a passenger while driving, on the other hand, still allows drivers to pay attention to their driving environment.

So to remind you all out there, it is understandable that there really are some instances when you would have to answer the call. But of course, while you believe and trust in your multitasking skills, it still wouldn't hurt to follow the safety recommendations provided by the AAA. It is for your own good.
  • Recognize that driving requires your full attention.

  • Before you get into the car, become familiar with the phone's features.

  • Use the phone only when absolutely necessary.

  • Use the phone only when and where it's safe to do so.

  • Ask a passenger to place the call for you and do the talking.

  • Keep the call short.

  • Tell the person at the other end that you're driving.

  • Get off the phone as soon as possible - especially in traffic or bad weather.

  • Don't combine a phone conversation with other distractions.

  • Secure your phone so it doesn't become a projectile in a crash.

Remember, safety first.

Sony Ericsson - Image 1Sony Ericsson has announced the latest in its P-series smart phone, the Sony Ericsson P1. The fifth generation of the P-series smart phone is lauded to be the most feature-rich yet among the line.

Steve Walker, Head of Product Marketing at Sony Ericsson, describes the company's latest smart phone:

In one sense the Sony Ericsson P1 is an evolution of our P-series smartphones, as it pushes forward the best attributes of its predecessors. At the same time there are also significant improvements in design, speed and battery performance.

The P1 is about 25% smaller than the P990, and supports consumer and corporate email, WLAN, and VoIP. Of course, no smart phone would be as smart without multimedia capabilities, that's why the P1 is geared with a 3.2 megapixel camera with business card scanner, media player, and 512MB Memory Stick Micro.

Some of its other features include the following:
  • QWERTY keyboard and handwriting text input
  • Predictive text input
  • Handwriting recognition
  • Transflective Display for bright light conditions
  • Document editors and readers
  • VoIP support
  • WLAN (Wi-Fi 802.11b)
  • Business card scanning
  • Video calling
  • Calculator
  • Calendar
  • Flight mode
But the P1 is not the only thing happening over at Sony Ericsson's backyard. At the same time, it has also announced two more new phones that will surely add light and color to its range: T650 and S500. The T650 "fuses illumination effects with a stainless steel finish and scratch-proof mineral glass", whereas the S500 is a slim slider phone that shows the desktop and menu themes that change over time.

Walker further states,

It's the details that set these phones apart. Our designers have taken inspiration from nature and the Nordic light to produce phones that are beautiful to look at and alive with energy. They appeal to those who want to celebrate their individuality and express themselves through their choice of phone.

The T650 is a 3G phone with 3.2 megapixel camera and media player, and comes in Growing Green and Midnight Blue. As for the S500, it houses a 2.0 megapixel camera that is hidden by the slider, and comes in Mysterious Green and Spring Yellow.

No details yet as to when these units will be shipped, or for how much. No pictures to revel in, either. We'll be sure to keep you posted on these three, though.

One Laptop Per Child Project - Image 1It's been a while since we heard anything on the ambitious, yet noble "$100 laptop" project from MIT and Google. The last we heard, the project was still targeting US$ 100 as cost for each laptop. But last Thursday, the founder of the One Laptop Per Child Project (OLPC) has revealed to the media that the machine currently stands at US$ 175.

Nicolas Negroponte describes the current situation of the OLPC as being in its "most critical stage". But why should he be worried when seven nations have already committed to the project? Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Pakistan, Thailand, Nigeria, and Libya have all expressed interest in the US$ 175 laptop (which was supposedly just US$ 100).

But verbal commitments obviously aren't enough to fuel the project into actual production. As of yet, none of the seven countries have paid upfront for the project, and so the manufacturing and distribution of the laptops cannot get going. It is reported that the organization will have to get orders for three million machines before their production could get well under way.

But despite of that, Negroponte remains optimistic, and in fact is expecting to begin mass production by October. The said laptops, or the "XO" computers will be developed by Quanta Computer Inc., and has been confirmed to be able to run the Windows program apart from its homegrown, open-source interface.

Interestingly enough, Microsoft's boss, Bill Gates, used to be an open critic of the OLPC project, saying that the laptops in the project is not a "decent computer". And now their softwares will be used for it. Well that sounds all good, then. There's nothing like cooperation among those in power for the benefit of the children.
