cell processor

As announced in the CEATEC (Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies) Japan, a cell chip developed by Toshiba, IBM, and Sony Computer Inc., similar to the cell processor of the upcoming next-gen console PS3, is now coming to mobile devices and cellphones. The cell processor is projected to be released next year.

Not much info has been announced about the new device aside from the fact that it will be manufactured using more advanced 65-nanometer production technology. A single chip of the new cell processor contains a main processor and eight sub-processors to unleash 200G Flops (floating point operations per second) of power.

Mitsuo Saito, one of the key creators of the chip from Toshiba's semi-conductor company, said, "As the first application we are focused on the consumer electronics area such as media servers or something like that, but Cell itself is not restricted to that area." Saito also added that Toshiba collaborated with IBM and Sony Computer Inc. to enhance the cell world. They are planing to have the same basis of software for each cell type. We are still waiting for the three companies to shed light on specific details of the cell chip but we promise to update you right away once new details surfaces so stay tuned!

Okay, we admit we are one of the people who are so fond of taking pictures of almost anything that interests us, and we believe that being able to take pictures with camera phones has been one of the best features that ever happened to mobile phones.

So, we are happy to announce that the UK companies Pocket Picks and Scoopt will be giving away a Nokia N73 mobile phone to the best mobile snaphot, this month of October. If you happen to be living in the UK, just submit interesting photos which you think would be interesting to at least a hundred other people out there, and we're talking about something really eye-catching here (we know your cat is lovely, but still...). The themes of your photos can range from social problems, an interesting event in your town, a out-of-this-world stunt you saw performed, or whatever you think would surely grab people's attention. Just remember to add a short caption to your photograph to make it more interesting, and voila! At the end of the month, the person with the most interesting photograph and story will win a brand-new Nokia N73, so that he or she can take more photos using its integrated 3.2 megapixel camera with a Carl-Zeiss optical lens for print-quality photos.

appleBoth Dell and Apple had issued a recall for their defective batteries as a response to the never-ending saga of the exploding batteries these past month.

For Dell, a recall of notebook batteries for models which includes Latitude D410, D600, D610 and D620. Under rare conditions, these batteries could possibly overheat, and are being replaced by Dell. As for Apple, they confirmed that a number of lithium-ion batteries containing cells manufactured by Sony Corporation of Japan pose a safety risk that may result in overheating under rare circumstances. The affected batteries were sold worldwide from October 2003 through August 2006 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4, and 15-inch PowerBook G4.

However, the next issue would be how long before these battery replacements arrive? One customer with a Dell D810 and an Apple Mac Book Pro commented that Apple was able to deliver the battery replacement less than 3 days after the request was filed (considering the request day was a Sunday). Not too bad. But he can't say the same thing with Dell. The guy is still waiting for the replacement. It's been 16 days or so since he filed for a request.

We wonder how long it took before other affected laptop owners receive their replacement batteries - or are they still playing the waiting game?

Sens G10

Samsung Electronics has launched a 17-inch note book called Sens G10 that doubles as a desktop PC. Sens G10 is equipped with AMD Mobile Sampron Processor, 512MB DDR2 Memory, 200-250GB SATA2 Hard disc, Nvidia GeForce GO 6100 Graphic Core and W-LAN.

Samsung claims that the 17-inch LCD monitor of with a contrast ratio of 700:1, 300(cd/m2), and 6ms response time reduces computer eye fatigue compared with the conventional notebook PC. It also has the desktop-level, high-speed, large-capacity hard disc that relies only on AC power supply instead of rechargeable batteries. As the saga of the exploding laptop batteries continues, could this "desknote" be a reliable computer solution for all those battery problems?

This year, the war for Japanese cellphone users' yen intensifies, thanks to a new regulation scheduled to go into effect this fall, allowing subscribers to change carriers without giving up their phone numbers. Starting October 24 of this year, "number portability" will raise the risk of subscriber defections, and increase the reward for the carrier with the coolest offerings.

KDDI Corp, Japan's second largest operator plans to produce 12 new handsets to attract more customers after three weeks. History says that Singapore is the world's first country to introduce number portability for mobile telephones in 1997. Since then other countries have given in to the hype on number portability with the advent of mobile phone. In most countries, different mobile operators are provided with different area codes, so without portability, changing one's operator would require changing one's number. And that is a big hassle for most people.

Reuters said that "Japanese operators are aiming to roll out new services and handsets to win market share ahead of the introduction of number portability on Oct. 24, when customers will be allowed to keep their phone numbers even if they change operators."

Japan has more than 90 million mobile phone users to date.

TeliaSoneraTeliaSonera, the dominant telephone company and mobile network operator in Sweden and Finland, recently unveiled their version of Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) under the name "Home Free". Home Free allows callers to use a mobile phone at home as an IP phone by using wireless technology to make very low-cost calls. The same phone also works outside the home as a normal mobile phone that automatically seeks out a mobile network. Currently, South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung is the only manufacturer that sells UMA phones with their SGH-P200.

For Danish families, the launch of this mobile-IP hybrid is good news since they "will now be able to cancel their fixed line subscriptions at home without losing their home phone numbers, and at the same time save more than 20 percent on their phone bill, " the head of TeliaSonera in Denmark, Jesper Brøckner, said in a statement.

Danish users will need to acquire a special telephone to be able to use the UMA technology, which will be operational in November 2006.
