RIM sues LG for using "Berry", "Black" in naming their devices

Irked with LG for using names too similar to the BlackBerry for comfort, Research in Motion (RIM) filed a lawsuit against LG for giving their mobile devices names such as "Black Cherry," "Strawberry," "Black Pearl," among others.

RIM believes that the privilege to give mobile devices names that use too much of "Black," "Berry," or "Pearl" should be exclusive to RIM only, reasoning that the goodwill associated with the BlackBerry's name is invaluable to RIM's continued success.

RIM has alleged that the names of LG's products infringe on their trademarks for being too similar to the BlackBerry brand. RIM's complaint against LG started on March 2006, when LG filed an application to use the Black Label brand. Soon thereafter, LG filed other applications to use names such as Black Jewel, Blackruby and Blackpearl.
