First Palm OS II devices to hit early 2009 - Image 1

Palm Inc.'s been on a rough patch lately, first with a downtrend a few years ago and then with the release of an intimidating competition, the popular Blackberry Smartphones. In an effort to kick it up a notch, Palm decided to switch to a Linux based system.

Palm Inc. hopes that the switch, which will give their smartphones a more flexible OS, will put them on an equal footing with the Blackberry. Now Palm Inc. has announced that development work on the new OS is expected to finish in late 2008.

This may come a bit late considering their balancing act in the market, but hopefully their Linux switch will give them a better standing. Devices running on the new OS are expected to be released early in 2009.

The new Palm OS has been nicknamed Palm OS II for now, but rumor has it that its official name is "Nova."
