Give One Get One ends, interview with Nicholas Negroponte - Image 1

With production delays and consumer extension demands, the prolonged life of One Laptop Per Child's (OLPC) Give One Get One program finally comes to an end. But luckily, Nicholas Negroponte graced the offices of LAPTOP Magazine to answer some questions.

As proof of the success of their program, OLPC had high numbers in terms of orders. As matter of fact, Negroponte estimated that the final number will be from 150,000 to 170,000 XO laptops without including the big orders, such as the one placed by Birmingham, Alabama for their kids with 15,000 units.

With the popularity and demand for such program, OLPC didn't want to prolong again since it would make them into a business instead of a charity. However, if they did, they'd be more concerned about the sales rather than the charitable cause that they were promoting.

Although it seems that a lot of people didn't want the Give One Get One program to end, Negroponte had this to say:

We are exploring two parallel routes. One is doing a Give One or Give Many for diaspora of specific countries - Ethiopia and Iran immediately. The other is doing a Give 1, Get 1 in specific countries: Italy and UK are in discussion. As for in the USA, maybe next Christmas.
