Microsoft Silverlight - Image 1Nokia just recently revealed the upcoming plans to integrate Microsoft's Silverlight technology for the Symbian OS installed in Nokia's S60 Touch Interface, Series 40 devices and Nokia Internet tablets. Microsoft Silverlight is a high-end cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in that provides a greatly enhanced internet experience, enabling animation, vector graphics, as well as audio video playback.

Nokia will also provide support for Silverlight for Symbian use, to let software developers produce interactive programs for users. The cellphone manufacturer's partnership with Microsoft will no doubt offer more opportunities for developers to try out their hand in creating optimized programs for Symbian. According to Williams, Senior Vice President in Nokia's Devices:

Nokia's software strategy is based on cross-platform development environments, enabling the creation of rich applications across the Nokia device range. Nokia aims to support market leading and content rich internet application environments and to embrace and encourage open innovation.

Will the Nokia handsets with Microsoft Silverlight rival other handsets made by other cellphone manufacturers? We will see when it happens. Do check this space for more updates!
