NokiaMobile phone company giant Nokia just put an end to rumors circulating for some time now that they are re-entering the games market. What's the real deal? Nokia is indeed resurrecting the dead! And while their tag line remains "Connecting people," they are hell bent to disconnect Nintendo and Sony from their handheld fan base.

"There’s going to reach a point where we and other handheld platform owners are battling for the same partners and the same consumers," disclosed Nokia UK and Ireland Head of Games Martin O’Driscoll. The official then confirmed that established publishers and developers have already signed up to produce content for their new Nseries phones and S60 software.

If this is the case, it seems that the Finland-based company has learned from its previous mistakes. O'Driscoll continued, "We’re moving into a new competitive space, where we have a real attractive offering for the games consumer. These are no longer just casual games. They are real games played by real gamers."

Accordingly, Nokia conducted a previous survey about worldwide mobile gaming habits. The study also revealed that the community will play a vital role for mobile gaming's future developments. The new series of mobile phones will be released early next year. And as to how much these phones would cost, O'Driscoll unwittingly commented,

The consumer will have to make a decision: does he wants a standalone gaming device with a limited browsing capability or a phone with an MP3 player, a camera and a bloody good games platform? I think consumers will be prepared to spend £300 (US$ 586) on a phone that offers all those different things rather than £100 to £150 for a stand alone games machine.

So, uh, should we care?

Nokia failed before, I doubt they'll succeed this time.

Nokia can't do games machines, they have poor ideas and poor design of them. Having to remove the battery to change game was such a bad idea, so was the screen orientation.

I'm not saying don't try else we may not have had the Xbox, but don't go blowing your trumpet till you should be, Noki ahave crapped out 2x and I can't see them being any different this time.

They have lots of confidence but no one is gonna pay $500 when they could have BOTH top handhelds for that much!!

» whoohoo, the n-gage will return

I have a n-gage, the graphics were nice(better then gameboy) too bad the games sucked, and the screen wasnt that practical. But it makes a hell of a routeplanner. I still use my n-gage 2day, but only as a routeplanner, not even phone :-)

» You can't spell Nokia without NO!

What a load of horse *****. They clearly didn't do enough market research, seen as even £180 for an all in one gaming device (PSP) lead by the gaming market leader is seen as too much for people. £300? That will go NO WHERE.

I'd rather buy an XBOX 360 or an iPod, seriously. The amount of games you can get on an iPod is probably better then anything Nokia will liscence.

 » You Are Wrong....

Seriously, think about the money thats being spent on phones....

You go to get a new contract, and want a new cell, theyll give you atleast 200-300 bucks on rebates nowadays, you could get a nokia that cost 600 for 300 upfront

now think, nokia might not know gaming, but they know hardware, from a multitasking point of view

they are open source, and a game system by them will be have unlimited online anywhere on the planet (cdma networks, or evdo if sprint), and thats highspeed anywhere too

itll also be a phone, mp3 player, daily planner, camera, and etc

and again, dont forget that nokia made the first trully 3d handheld platform, all they have to do is make it better, they know what they did wrong, and man, theyll whoop sum @ss is they came back

trust me, theyll get the 3rd party support, the markets too big and untaped

 » Nokia...No.

Right idea? Is Nokia even the company to do it? Nah... Gaming and Cell phones are NOT coming together. Cell phones are expanding in functionality and getting SMALLER. Game systems aren't worried about size. I love my amazing Gameboy Micro... But screen size is an important factor. Sliders maximize screen size and compact design, but are they properly configured to play a game? All in one functionality isn't so hot..usually something suffers dramatically. I will always have my faith in Nintendo to succeed in the handheld war. The PSP is garbage. I own one, i have hacked custom firmware, and yeah, i get my use out of it. The general population, however, does not. I like my DS better, personally, which is a suprise, because I strongly disliked Nintendo after the launch of the gamecube. i bought a psp first...actually. Anyway, on point. The N gage was garbage. it was retarded as a game system, and even more so as a phone. My Motorola (That's where it's at, btw) SLVR with a 2GB miniflash is great. Nokia has better signal strength...That's about it. And Samsung.

 » N-gage

N-gage failed because the world have a lot of *****ing noob fans, that don´t open your mind to other brands, n-gage is a powerfull mobile phone e console, put a 1gb MMC on it and see, go Nokia you made the best mobile phones and you can do it know, you learn with N-gage and don´t make the same mistake two times.

For all that think this will be like N-gage, sorry guys, but this console will be a really powerfull mediacenter mobile phone console, and the screen will be really big, all you will agree with me when this console release.

GO GO GO Nokia, we don´t want brands, but a nice console, don´t metter if its sony, nintendo, microsoft, sega, nokia, xing ling, mother*****ers, chickens .... whatever ...
This can be anything ... but this have to be a great console ...

» Oh Man almso beat the level...who the hell is calling me

To keep this simple, having all in one tech stuff in todays world is cool and all, but when i want to play video games i want to play video games. I dont want to use my all-in one phancy phone. Why do i have a psp? because the good games (it took awhile but they came :P [woot MGS Ops] ) and damn I love the homebrew community. Do i really want a phone with games on it..simply no myself because of just a few scenarios that come to mind. Like not answer the phone because your too busy gaming. Wasting/lower battery life due to the amount needed for the gaming aspect.

Some times keeping it simple works best, too look at this look at the Wii vs the other two giants ok one giant and a computer geek about to get smash. The Wii is totally going for the simple factor and I love this idea. No complex interface, controls, etc. Also last time i heard of Nokia gaming stuff I cryed laughing. Went to EB asked how do I turn on this N-Gage. Random EB employer "Its a N-gage of course it doesnt work". Just thought it was funny...that aside though I remain confident that this is a bad ploy. Sure I love to get Before Crisis but im not geting some stupid phone (if i was able to get it in the first place) for my gaming habbits.

 » What about SonyEricsson?

I think we have forgot about one major player that could trouth punch Nokia, namly SonyEricsson... What if this company would to do the same, release a 3D gaming phone???
It already has a good market with the WalkMan phone, and it would be so easy for them to get PS1 and maybe even PSP games (as a good groundbase before even having to make specific games for that platform) for a gaming phone... I say watch out...

Actually there have been some rumors about a PSPhone...

Best regards!

» Nokia, thanks, but are you nuts?

Uhm, ok, they failed once and want to try again? Sure, why not, if they have the money to waste. They want to combine something like the PSP and a mobile phone? Sure, but you need a car battery to power it.
A mobile phone should be used to call people, write and send SMS and maybe MMS. Mostly even for an MP3-player a mobile is too big, when I want to listen to music I want something the size of an Ipod shuffle (old version) and not the PSP or even a Nokia N-Gage.
And the price is a joke. The N-Gage didn't sell well, the N-Gage QD didn't sell well, even compared to the N-Gage, so why do Nokia think a new version of that series would sell well? And as Matt wrote, size does matter. Big screens and good fast hardware in case of a game device and the smaller the better with a mobile phone. Also hardware like a fast processor and so on isn't that important for a mobile.

   by anonymoose (Unregistered) - 2006-11-30
 » Powerfull

Could be good as long as its powerfull and the screen is a decent size (Aka PSP sized, or close to it) No-one wants to play on a tiny little screen!
Also if its relatively powerfull and is easily hackable (Aka like the PSP) then it could be a good thing, since game platforms get somewhat subsidized you could get quite a decent emulating machine or basically mini computer for quite cheap
(ala PS3 as a linux server its a STEAL)

   by mbslrm - 2006-11-30
 » Sony

If Sony wanted, they could already do it, with the best players, in every segment. CyberShot can make the camera. Walkman can do the media playback. PlayStation can do teh gaming, and SonyEricsson can make the phone.

 » hahah ya rite..

lol you gotta be kidding me.. nokia is coming back? for what? that nokia ncage was the worse handheld system ever. Who actually uses a phone to play games?? that just says it all. now if microsoft plans to make a handheld then that be diffferent.. and as for sony making the psp 2 that be pretty cool... heh i wonder if nintendo has an idea for there next handheld.

big Deal we have seen the sony ericsson PSP phone, if it actually comes out, anyways Sony already came up with the idea.

 » I still use it

I have an N-Gage since summer 2004 and I still use it every day. It cost 110€ (145$) with the game Ashen. It was (and is) a powerful Smartphone with Symbian OS. I can watch movies, listen to MP3 and radio, play Java and 3D Symbian games. OK, you have to sidetalk when you use it as a mobile phone but at the time it was released (3 years ago) it was awesome. The thing is, I get everything in the same device. I wouldn't like to carry a phone, an MP3 player and a Game Boy Micro to do all the things that the N-Gage can do by itself.
Nokia screwed it up with the N-Gage QD, monoaural, no radio. I hope they learn the lesson this time. But NO ONE is going to spend more than 150$ on a machine like that.
I also have a PSP, because N-Gage games look like crap nowadays...

n-gage totally sucked for me, i hardly find games at the store so i'm not surprised it didn't last long :/ anyway i hope nokia will learn from these mistakes and makes us a reaaaally good handheld gaming device !!

 » Lammeee....

I bought myself an N-gage when it came out and I was impressed with Tomb Raider. After that I didn't bother buying anymore games, so when I saw the N-gage QD I thought I'd buy it along with a few games; so I did. In the end I realised all the games sucked and I wasted a crapload of money on a brick phone duo(With the second brick being slightly smaller). Now they're planning on releasing another piece of crap that costs £300? That's just lame, not the normal kind either; it's hardcore lame.

   by Mentality - 2006-11-30
 » HAHAHAHA Stupid Nokia

They reckon that consumers will be prepared to spend at least £300 on a gaming mobile phone.

This is £125 cheaper than the PS3 in the UK - Get real, I know which I would choose in a second.

Nokia failed in this area before and they will again, they're was nothing more than a PSX emulator with memory card games, they sucked badly.

I borrowed one off my friend when I drowned my other phone and I could bare to use it, or get it out in public for that matter.

 » ...

What I don't understand is all the people saying "to get the same functionality I'd need to carry a phone, gameboy, mp3 player, kitchen sink, rifle..." etc etc.

I know the US is running a bit behind with mobile phone tech due the the initial popularity of pagers but I didn't realise it was _that_ far behind.

Any smart phone now a days will give you all you need, wifi, 3 megapixel camera, internet explorer, mp3 players, windows media player, divx players, games, outlook, calendars etc etc

(btw the PS3 can comunicate w/ friends and PSP will have voip...eventually)

   Re: T101 - 2006-12-01
 » Not a fanboy

I'm not a Nokia fanboy. I have a PSP now because nowadays N-Gage is a piece of crap in gaming technology and there were only like 60 games released for the system. N-Gage WAS an awesome and cheap machine 3 years ago but nobody trusted it, so now it is considered as *****.

If he was actually implying $586 to be an approximate or exact price, he is smoking SERIOUSLY BAD CRACK. His crack was cut with aspestos and anthrax or some *****.
