Windows XP Microsoft - Image 1When it comes to ultra low-cost PCs, most electronics consumers think of one operating system that is most likely pre-loaded on budget laptops: Linux. But that may not be the case any more soon, now that Microsoft is trying to find ways to level the competition between its Windows OS and its open source Linux counterpart.

Microsoft is offering Windows XP to ultra low-cost PC manufacturers at a high discount, but there are some conditions to be met before they will be eligible for the offer: the proposed low-cost PCs should be limited to 10.2-inch screens, should be non-touch screen, and can only have up to 80GB of hard drive storage.

One of the first ultra low-cost PCs to be offered with budget windows is the Asus Eee PC, which shares the same price tag as the Linux-flavored Eee.

So will this benefit electronics consumers? Of course. An unnamed executive of a PC manufacturing firm stated that this set-up will prove beneficial, since it fosters healthy competition between Windows and Linux. The sales for ultra low-cost PCs will be jacked up as well, since those who prefer user-friendly PCs may opt to get Windows-powered machines.

» You are obviously a NOOB if your bragging about Vista.

Vista is the worst OS out now Microsoft knows it that why there coming out w/ a new OS next year. I have Vista installed on my home PC. The only good thing about it is it looks cool. But over all it sux. You cant mod 360's w/ Vista. You cant make magic memory sticks w/ Vista. Its GARBAGE

mohaas05 is saying that it's not worth buying a new pc that doesn't have the specs to run vista. Isn't microsoft rumoured to have a new os coming out next year? there would be no way to run that if the next comp you buy can barely run vista.

» vista is not the worst os

i have vista ultimate and all i can say is i like it. flashier than xp possibly a bit slower on a bad pc and if i put xp on mine it would run better in games and that but theres a solution buy newer stuff for your pc. in the end vista is out and new it has direct x 10. everybody has been through this before with the last option from windows 2000 to xp it happens every time when a new os comes out people dont like it and stay with the old one but in the end they upgrade and say the same thing next time. get it over and done with and upgrade
