Intel Atom and Intel Centrino Atom logos - Image 1Adopters of mobile Internet devices (MIDs) and low-cost PCs now have something to look forward to, as Intel just announced its new line of small, low-power processors. The Intel Atom brand aims to satisfy MID users and other low-end setups. Along with it comes the Intel Centrino Atom processor technology specifically for MID platforms.

Even as a new set of processors, Intel made sure PC owners can expect Intel Core 2 Duo compatibility. Intel Atom dons a chip smaller than 25mm squared area, yet promises competitive performance with the inclusion of support for multiple threads.

Intel's Executive Vice President and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Sean Maloney made a statement, saying:

This is our smallest processor built with the world's smallest transistors. This small wonder is a fundamental new shift in design, small yet powerful enough to enable a big Internet experience on these new devices. We believe it will unleash new innovation across the industry.

On the other hand, the Intel Centrino Atom processor technology is the company's best offering for MIDs. This technology involves the Intel Atom processor, integrated graphics, a wireless radio, and light designs suited for the mobile devices.
