mgsOne of IGN's quirks that they openly share with the public is their Top 10 Tuesday stints, where they make a weekly countdown of anything and everything related to games and gaming. While some are educational, exceptional, and even absurd, there are some that are just, how do we describe this, uh...fascinating? Yes. That's the word that comes closest to mind, fascinating.

For this week, they countdown the top ten videogame ringtones that grace your cellphones. Makes sense actually, since some games' themes are already stuck in your head anyway so why not make it your ringtone as well, eh? Here's the list:

10) Overworld Theme from Super Mario Bros. - we have to agree that this one's definitely a classic. This writer has personally heard of someone who can even play this tone on the guitar. Hail the guitar geek extraordinaire.

9) Tetris' Music A - also a classic, but as a ringtone, it can be a bit too frantic. We suggest that people who are heavily loaded on caffeine should NOT use this as their ringtone.

8) Stage One of Doom -  still recognizable, yet a bit obscure. Fast enough without pressuring you get frantic while answering your phone. This will also help you detect fellow die-hards if they nod in acknowledgement upon hearing your ringtone.

7) Guile's Theme from Street Fighter II - blares loudly from the start, immediately calling attention to your phone. But if you get nostalgic over the sound, you can always make your caller wait just a little bit longer.

6) Final Fantasy II's Chocobo Forest - has a lighthearted and joyful feel

5) Snake Man Stage Theme from Mega Man 3 - starts with a quite startling arrangement and then the melody becomes recognizable. The guys at IGN think this theme "rocks" and sounds good on cellphones.

4) Castlevania's Vampire Killer - has punchy NES notes that make it suitable for cellphones, and is easily recognizable to hard core gamers

3) Invincibility Theme from Sonic the Hedgehog 2- Sonic may be world famous, but very few are familiar with this tone. Whether that's a good or bad thing if you use it on your phone, you be the judge.

2) The Legend of Zelda's Overworld Theme - the theme isn't very common, and this could potentially show the people who hear your ringtone that you're hardcore and you have good taste in games. But then again maybe that's just us.

1) Codec Bleep from Metal Gear Solid - what makes the codec bleep so cool is its exclusivity. So exclusive that if you check out IGN's article on this, you'll see that they didn't even link to it. And according to them, this is why they made the codec bleep number one.

Of course, that's just IGN's top ten, if you have a different list of your own, why not share 'em with others via the comments? Perhaps you could share the joy of having a game theme torture you by playing over and over in your head. That way you get to release the toot toot tididit dit beep beep's haunting your brain and pass it onto others. Sweet geeky torture, that's what it is.

 » Monkey Island

I have had the monkey island theme tune on my phone for ages, I ripped it from monkey island 1 and then when I started working for my new boss I found out his ring tone was ripped from monkey island 2. Needless to say, it was a great start to our working relationship.
