Rumored Google Phone - Image 1Google has now completely debunked all rumors of a Googlephone, or Gphone, in their official blog, where they formally introduced their new open-source mobile platform. Their open-source mobile OS finally has a name - Android - and it will be a joint effort by the members of the group known as Open Handset Alliance.

The Open Handset Alliance comprises of major mobile communications companies, such as Motorola, Qualcomm, HTC, and T-Mobile. With the Alliance, Google plans to develop a mobile OS "without the proprietary obstacles that have hindered mobile innovation".

Business publication Wall Street Journal previously reported on a new mobile phone being developed by Google, which was also "confirmed" by Google's chief executive in Spain and Portugal. Now that the rumor haze has cleared, it turns out that Google was working on a mobile phone operating system, and not an actual mobile handset.

Google then invites developers and budding developers alike to check out the page in Open Handset Alliance dedicated to software developers. Google will also release the Android SDK in a week or so through that webpage.
