...these days may be coming to an end, which is really good news. People can't totally concentrate and focus on driving while yakking away on their cell phones. It's a concentration deficit  that causes people to forget their driving skills causing accidents all over the country. However, at this moment no state has banned cell phones while driving but that is changing. 26 states and D.C. are looking into banning the use of cell phones while driving. Although some states like New York have banned holding phones while driving, this has not solved the problem because the problem is a lack of concentration - not holding the phone. Unfortunately, this will be an unpopular law that will be hard to enforce but people need to realize that driving comes first and you can talk on the phone when you get through driving, nothing is that important. Not to mention that a few years ago we didn't have this luxury and everyone was able to survive. People need to realize that's just what driving while talking on your cell phone is: a luxury, not a necessity.

Ur an idiot... so why not stop people from talking to other people in the car, or woman putting on makeup, or listening to music, or eatting, or drinking, or blinking? Those all cause the same problem - not paying attention. Ur analysis is flawed and you seem to want to jump on that bandwagon rather than looking at the real problem and solving that. You must be a liberal! Get ur facts straight and come back with a response.

Nice article and I couldn't agree more. Sure putting on makeup and eating etc while driving are causes for accidents too, but while driving on the freeway, take the time to count how many people are on the phone vs. anything else. Or even how many times you see someone switch lanes almost hitting someone because they are on their phone. The dangerous phone users far outnumber anything else, hence the urgency for such a bill.

Steps are need and I hope some form of legislation is passed requiring etiquette for cell phones and driving.

Dont know where you live but here in California that is not the truth. Get on the freeway in the morning and people are eatting their breakfast, putting on makeup, changing cd's, students are reading stuff in the cars, business people are on their PDA's doing stuff and then there are those who are car pooling just yacking away. Don't try and criminalize one aspect of the distractions. And no the majority are not using cell phone... the majority are just not driving safely. Fix that problem and the rest will follow... Such narrow minds people.. open them and you'll see that your wrong... but have a nice day as I get off my cell phone on the highway :)

you sir are a *****!^

Cellphone use behind the wheel is one of the biggest causes of road accidents!

Here in the UK we have a law that you cant use your phone while driving but a fat lot of good thats doing!! if our police would get off thier fat asses and POLICE then the problem might decrease!

The bunch of you are getting dumber as you respond. If you look at ur last line you contradict urself and help prove my point. If the police enforced the laws or people followed them better... then you would not need to restrict cell phones or anything else in the car for that matter. Once you start restricting certain things that you can do, the government will try to take more power and restrict more and more things you can do. Do you really want them telling you that you can't talk about politics in public places or that you have to have a brown wallet or that you can't talk on ur cell phone in a car. What is to stop them from enacting all sorts of laws banning all sorts of things they see as "unsafe"? Remember what that was - Socialism. It didn't work!

» ^^^^ you must sell cell phone car adapters.

I mean I agree with you that cell phones are a small part of the problem but seriously you have to start somewhere. You do realize that solving 2% of a problem is still an improvement... don't you?
Honestly for someone who likes to attack complete strangers over an opinion you sound like a moron. You make valid arguments but then shoot yourself in the foot by saying that everyone elses opinion is stupid.

You preach how its bad to be restricted by what you can and can't do yet you try to restrict everybody else.
Do you really want to live in a society that people can't express their opinions without being attacked?...I think you do!

You are a dumb ignorant person who uses the internet to attack people instead of using it to increase your knowledge.

Get off your lazy a$$ and go out in public and talk to some real people. It's evident that your are miserable and want everybody else to feel as *****ty as you.

Do us all a favor and go talk to someone on the street with the same amount of respect your showing strangers. See what happens!

Well ur ignorant aren't you. I have no problem with people expressing their opinions, God knows I do. But when those idiots start to enact laws that directly affect me - then I have a problem.

If you think my arguments are correct then agree with them and shut up. Don't go off on me when ur telling me not to go off on them. Whose the idiot now?

And how flippin contraditory is it that you go off on me and say that I should accept starting somewhere and that I should say things in a certain way and then you do the same damn thing? Ur just as ignorant as the rest.

Again, if you have something good to say say it. Otherwise shut up. Why dont you stick to what you do best, agree with me, and let the rest of us do the debating. A$$
