laptop - Image 1If you think that your laptop can't catch up with most of today's PC gaming and programs, don't consider shelling out money to buy a new laptop just yet. Yes, we're talking about upgrading your laptop yourself, and while the task isn't as easy as counting one-two-three, it's certainly possible as long as you know how to use basic tools such as screwdrivers and aren't queasy with taking your laptop apart.

Thanks to the how-to guide posted in PC World, laptop upgrading is now simplified - but don't make the mistake of thinking that it's something that a kid can do. Basic knowledge on taking electronics apart is still a must, so be forewarned.

One thing that should be kept in mind is that while upgrading laptops is possible, not all machines can be upgraded because some have their parts soldered or cannot be taken apart using conventional means (screwdrivers, etc).

Also, since you're dealing with electronics, you have to keep your safety in mind so make sure you unplug your laptop from its power source and wear a grounded wrist strap to avoid electrical shocks.

Of course, you need to have all the tools needed to take apart your laptop. A wide selection of screwdrivers at hand will help a lot. Since you'll be mostly dealing with screws, you have to make sure to remember which screw goes where so you won't have any problems putting your machine back together again.

With that said, it's better to check if your laptop manufacturer provided a disassembly guide before you proceed, to make the task easier for you.

The following devices are the usual components that are changed during a laptop upgrade:
  • RAM
  • Hard Drive
  • Optical Drive
  • Bluetooth
  • Wireless Card
If you're aiming to have any of the above laptop components upgraded, then you'd better check out the Via link for PC World's step-by-step guide on how to make your laptop workable with today's specs-heavy games and other functions. Good luck!

» You can upgrade the graphics card

You can upgrade the graphics card in certain laptops.
Like for example, if you get the mid range graphcis card with a dell inspiron 1720 laptop, you can upgrade to the higher end one at a later date. (the onboard graphics motherboard version of the 1720 version cant though)

I always find that it depends on your motherboard, which 8 times out of 10 will prevent you from upgrading, even if they were promoting upgrade capability when you bought it.

You're better off just buying the best laptop you can afford, let it ride for a few years, then buy a new one later on if you wish.
