capcomWith Japan-based game publishers breaking into the US mobile games business, it's interesting to know what types of games we can expect from these companies. Gamasutra has caught up with Midori Yuasa, General Manager and Senior VP for Capcom Entertainment's mobile division. She sheds some light on Capcom's foray into the mobile games arena.

Capcom isn't new to the mobile games business in Japan. In fact, it's has been publishing games for mobile phone for more than 5 years. It was only in 2005 that the company decided to take the plunge in the US waters. They felt that the US market has matured and handsets had advanced to the point where it'll be possible to bring popular Capcom titles with realistic translations.

In Japan, there's a more unified platform for developing games for mobile phones, whereas in the US, Capcom has to content with having to port a game for almost every possible handset and carrier combination. This adds another layer of complexity, which translates to higher cost to the development process.

When asked about the strongest mobile game titles for 2006, Yuasa replied:

Capcom is a company that is known for its franchises and it’s difficult to identify which would be our most powerful – how can one choose between Mega Man, Ghost 'n Goblins, Street Fighter and Resident Evil, to name but a few?

As for our strongest titles for ’06 we’ve already launched Mega Man, Ghost ‘n Goblins, and Resident Evil: The Missions to critical and commercial success. We also anticipate great things for Super Puzzle Fighter 2: Network Battle, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for the latter half of the year.

Capcom is looking to expand their business and aims to get a big slice of the US mobile game pie. With that, we can expect more of Capcom's popular franchises to get the mobile game treatment.
