It seems that LED back-lit laptops are the current trend in portable computer development. The accepted reason for this is that it is cheaper that the usual cold-cathode florescent lamp used in older units.

Both Apple and Dell have jumped on the bandwagon and have tapped Kenmos Technology and Taiwan Nano Electro-Optical Technology (Nano-Op) to supply them with notebook-use LED backlight units.

This means that contrary to previous reports, Taiwan will indeed be the supplier of some of Apple's LED back-lit units. So far, Apple has only ordered 10,000 units from Nano-OP since November.

However, it is expected that the orders for over 90,000 units will be placed by this December. Kenmos on the other hand will be providing LED notebooks for the high end models of both Dell and Apple.

Projected shipments are expected to hit 200,00 in the fourth quarter and up to 200,000 units in the first quarter of 2008.
